LongArm Quilting

This quilt had a Japanese theme with a center panel that the client had done herself in the Sashiko style, and is the second quilt he has been commissioned to do for this client.  As the center panel was sashiko and more sashiko was going to be added,  she asked for the centre panel to be left unquilted.  As with her last quilt she wanted to do the binding herself.  This was quite a testing commission for Alan because, although he has missed out panels before, he wanted this to be as precise as he could.

With the client wanting to have the panel left unquilted Alan hand-stitched the wadding to the quilt top in a few places with yellow/white embroidery thread.  This is because if a quilt is to be washed then all waddings need to be stitched between 4-10” apart to stop the wadding moving.  The stitches only go through the wadding and topcoat so that when more Sashiko is added the backing will be able to be kept separate.

In keeping with the Japanese theme and after discussing different patterns with the client, via email, the Dragonfly border pattern was decided on.  This was very apt as Dragonflies are symbolic of Japan and are held in high esteem by Japanese people.

A new needle is used for every quilt and for this quilt I used 1 Groz-Beckert 10Nm 100/14 needle. The total time taken on this was 84 hours  12 mins.

In total there were  189514  stitches at  15 stitches per inch for the pattern, which used approximately 2376 meters of thread.

My quilt has arrived safely and I love it. The dragon flies are really effective and the red was a good choice.  I am really pleased thank you very much.    J.
